Afton Wildlife Crossing & Corridor Project
The Afton Wildlife Crossing & Corridor Project is a bold, science-backed initiative facilitated by Wild Virginia and led by a collaborative of nearly 30 nonprofit, governmental, academic, and private partners working to reconnect fragmented wildlife habitat across Interstate 64 in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. This critical corridor is part of one of the largest wildlife migration routes on the East Coast, connecting two ecological cores of the Eastern Wildway and supporting both aquatic and terrestrial species, including state-listed imperiled species like brook trout and eastern box turtles.
By addressing a major barrier to wildlife movement, the project advances land conservation, monitors wildlife use of the corridor, and implements nature-based infrastructure that benefits wildlife while also supporting safe travel and outdoor recreation for thousands of people each year.
